Living in a Homeowner’s Association is a great boon to your property value and it helps keep the neighborhood up to code and looking great. But if you feel like your creativity is stifled, we have some great tips for you. Decorating the outside of your home this summer doesn’t have to be a stuffy experience if you follow these simple tips:
First, find out what is allowed in your HOA.
You should have all of your HOA information, including bylaws and restrictions, given to you by your realtor. Larger communities might have a website. All laws, bylaws, and restrictions must be written down and available for members of the HOA to view. Read up on how you can begin your outdoor decorating this summer, and then start getting creative.
Chat with your neighbors about your decoration plans before you start.
While you might enjoy waking up every morning to see a foam replica of Stonehenge on your front lawn, and even if it is allowable, your neighbors might not want to see megalithic structures outside their windows. Simply float ideas by your neighbors to gauge their reaction. Besides, if your project piques your neighbors’ interests, they might help you out!
When you’re planning your decorating projects, take the rest of your neighborhood into consideration.
Make sure any packaging material or unsightly wear and tear on your lawn for your decorating projects gets cleaned up quickly. If your outdoor project, such as a backyard bar, needs power tools, be sure to use them when they won’t disrupt other people, such as during the day or early evening.
While your own individual HOA will have its own set of rules, there many things you can do right at home by yourself for little money and effort. We’ll explore a handful of them in our next post, so stay tuned! We’ll help you find a project that fits your HOA and your creative spirit!
